Dubai is a massive land with lot of activities, constructions, tallest or biggest stuff in the world. To my own taste, it’s neither marvelous nor mesmerizing. In the words of Sabina about New York: “beauty consists of its accidental, unpremeditated oppositions and mistakes”(The unbearable lightness of being, Milan Kundera). It’s fresh, new but lacks the sensitivity and authenticity of the past. The beaches are impressively amazing and the architecture is pure artistic. You can find everything and anything, everyone and anyone.
People from all over the globe move to Dubai in order to get a good job, save money, and build future. Given the prices and the entertainment options, no one can save a penny. It’s an expensive country with lot of temptation and massive amount of rules.
After staying for 5 days in Dubai, I actually missed Lebanon organized mess. Yes we don’t drive safely, but we have drivers rule that runs among us (fellow drivers) secretly. I missed the weird roads where the holes and deterioration tells a different story to each. I missed the small distances, the sound pollution, the arrogance of people, the simplicity yet complexity of Lebanese Lives. I just missed Lebanon: the perfect imperfection.
The sky in Dubai is sandy but even with the progressive pollution in Lebanon our sky is blue, our moon is bright and beautiful (and still following me). Dubai is high tech, modern city. But Lebanon is a country with history, drama, beauty, charm. Lebanon has this “je ne sais quoi”.
Overall, Dubai is really fascinating to live in, always something new. I would consider it a good place to work in: good jobs and lot of activities. I know there are lots that I haven’t seen or tried given the time and my tight schedule. For charm and inspiration, visit Lebanon.
